Modern Gym. Retro Price–Retro Fitness
Posted on September 2, 2010 · Leave a CommentMake sure you have your one shoulder cut-up sweatshirt, spandex, Reebok Aerobic Classics and your fanny pack for your cassette player so you can achieve all your goals at Retro Fitness! That’s right, it’s an 80s themed workout facility right in Marietta. In fact, it’s off Cobb Parkway. But hey, don’t get me wrong, I know River Heights has a nice new state-of-the-art fitness center, but this is something you’ve at least got to see.
You can go on their website and get a guest pass to visit the gym and you can even sign for a membership online for just 10/month! Wait, I thought this place was 80s themed? I’m almost positive we didn’t have the interwebs back then. Anyway, this place has it all: weights, 80s music, treadmills while watching Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and a snack bar (for your smoothies and such).
Modern Gym. Retro Price. At least check it out for a bit of nostalgia.

Stealing Dixie in Marietta
Posted on August 30, 2010 · Leave a CommentHistorical act later used as basis for a Disney film, The Great Locomotive Chase, was a huge part of the American Civil War. So much so that 19 of the 23 participants in the raid were awarded the Medal of Honor; the first recipients. I dove into this a little soon, allow me to give you a little background on the 1862 event.
The Great Locomotive Chase was a military raid that occurred in 1862, in northern Georgia during the Civil War. Volunteers from the Union Army raided a train and took it north toward Chattanooga doing as much damage as possible to the vital Western & Atlantic Railroad from Atlanta, Georgia to Chattanooga, Tennessee. A heroic act to say the least and well worth the many re-enactments done about it. In fact, Atlanta playwright Phillip DePoy has done his part with his new play “Stealing Dixie,” at Marietta’s Theatre in the Square.
Playing through September 12th, the play has garnered rave reviews from critics around the city. “’Stealing Dixie’ is a richly described commingling of history and imagination, “says AJC writer Wendell Brock. Zechariah Pierce plays a superb ringleader in James Andrews as he leads his bunch through the Southeast destroying everything in their way.
Ticket prices vary depending on the day and the time, so be sure to check the the schedule before making your way to the theatre. But, no matter, you’ll definitely enjoy the show, plus it’s only a 30 minute drive from River Heights!

Miss Mary’s Ice Cream Crankin’
Posted on August 24, 2010 · Leave a CommentAfter working on that beach body all summer it’s time to let it go or at least “let go” for the day! The 6th Annual Miss Mary’s Ice Cream Crankin’ will be held this Sunday, August 29th at Roswell Town Square from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. If you don’t want to “let go” just yet (I understand, I don’t want to either), then at least workout extra hard the rest of this week so you can indulge come Sunday.
AYCE Ice Cream. That’s what you get at Miss Mary’s Ice Cream Crankin’ and I guess people have been crankin’ since this is its sixth year being held. There will be over 150 flavors of ice cream available for tasting and if you get tired (or sick) of ice ice cream there will also be snocones and popcorn available to eat.
And there’s not just food at this event, there will be games and activities to participate in as well as an ice cream competition! And the prices are great too–just $5 for an individual and $15 for the family. I’d say this “end of the summer” celebration is definitely worth the 20 minute drive from home!

SOHO
Posted on August 23, 2010 · Leave a CommentThe French have given us three amazing things: democracy, crepes and bistros. In that particular order and I’ll elaborate a bit on the latter. According to Wikipedia, “A bistro, in its original Parisian incarnation, is a small restaurant serving moderately priced simple meals in a modest setting.” They are usually characterized by the foods they serve; slowly cooked foods typically.
And SOHO personifies just that! This small bistro located in the Atlanta-Vinings area offers a very eclectic fare which includes meals originating in the Orient to those born just over the border and everything in between. SOHO offers a dynamic new tapas and wine pairing every week for return customers and newbies alike.
And every Sunday (while the summer lasts) the restaurant hosts a Low Down Lobster Boil complete with a 1 1/2 lb. Maine lobster, Andouille sausage and creamer potatoes. I don’t want to forget the $3 pints of Sweetwater 420! If SOHO sounds like you, be sure and get the Groupon that’s being offered today! You pay $20 for $40 worth of SOHO goodness! But you need to hurry; you only have 10 hours left to get this deal, but the certificate doesn’t expire until January 31, 2011.
You should be all set River Heights! SOHO is just a 25 minute drive from home.

The ‘Berry
Posted on August 11, 2010 · Leave a CommentThere’s a store off of Cobb Parkway about 20 minutes from River Heights that puts a huge smile on my face when I just think about it! Pinkberry. Every time I have a bowl of yogurt from this place I feel as if I’m in yogurt nirvana. I’ve been on a ridiculous froyo and shaved ice kick lately and I’ve tried places all over. I went to a shaved ice establishment off of Jimmy Carter last night and I had a huge bowl of their flavored finely shaved ice (they will remain anonymous) and it was a little disappointing. It was hyped up by one of my co-workers and I expected so much more! No bueno.
Pinkberry, on the other hand, has an abundance of flavors and toppings! They have anything from mochi to mangoes to milk chocolate! It’s the perfect ending to a perfect day. You can head to P.F. Chang’s for dinner and then have a nightcap with Pinkberry (sounds like a beautiful date night). But, whatever you do, be sure to visit the ‘Berry (as I like to call it). There are literally over 300 combination options of one yogurt to one topping. But, you’re probably not going for one and one, which means there are really thousands of combination options for you to choose from. Go ahead and indulge [in moderation]!

And while you navigate through the beautiful artwork, be sure and stop by “Artists’ Alley,” that will feature a variety of art styles that will amaze you!
